Westbury FM’s investment in Charlton Athletic Community Trust has generated an estimated £330,000 of social value, demonstrating the measurable community impact of the partnership.
At Westbury FM, we believe partnerships should deliver more than brand visibility. They should create meaningful opportunities, support local communities and make a measurable difference to people’s lives.
That principle sits at the heart of our relationship with Charlton Athletic Community Trust, known as CACT.
CACT’s recently published Social Value Report has calculated that Westbury FM’s £30,000 investment has delivered an estimated £330,000 of social value.
The calculation is based on CACT’s organisation-wide Social Return on Investment, or SROI, ratio of £11 of social value for every £1 invested.
Understanding the impact
Social value measures the wider social, economic and wellbeing benefits created through an organisation’s activities.
In practical terms, the £330,000 figure represents the estimated value of positive outcomes supported through CACT’s work and Westbury FM’s contribution. These include outcomes relating to:
- Improved mental health and wellbeing
- Increased confidence and self-esteem
- Reduced social isolation
- Greater participation in sport and physical activity
- Improved attitudes towards education
- Training and employment opportunities
- Increased independence
- Improved ability to face challenges.
The figure does not represent a financial return to Westbury FM. It reflects the wider value created for individuals, families and communities through the programmes supported by the partnership.
A robust approach to measuring social value
CACT uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative research to assess the impact of its programmes.
This includes participant surveys, administrative records, case studies, feedback and information relating to programme engagement, reach and demographics.
Baseline and end-of-programme responses are compared to identify the changes experienced by participants. CACT then uses the Sports Value Bank to apply an appropriate monetary value to the outcomes achieved.
Factors such as age, gender, disability, postcode and local deprivation are considered within the analysis. The methodology also deducts “deadweight”, meaning the proportion of an outcome that may have happened without the programme. This helps to ensure the figures do not overstate the impact created.
CACT has confirmed that its approach to calculating Trust-wide and programme-specific social value and SROI figures has been validated by the University of Greenwich.
To calculate Westbury FM’s contribution, CACT applied its Trust-wide SROI ratio of £11 for every £1 invested to Westbury FM’s investment of £30,000.
More than sponsorship
Westbury FM’s partnership with CACT is about much more than financial sponsorship.
Through the relationship, we aim to help create opportunities for young people and support them in developing the confidence, experience and skills needed to move towards employment.
The partnership has also enabled Westbury FM to promote opportunities within facilities management and construction, introduce young people to potential career pathways and help demonstrate that the built environment offers roles for people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Our work with CACT also complements Westbury FM’s partnership with Charlton Athletic Women and our commitment to encouraging more women and girls to explore careers within construction, engineering and facilities management.
Creating lasting opportunities
Sonia Murton, Founder and Managing Director of Westbury FM, said:
“We have always wanted our relationship with CACT to be about much more than sponsorship. We wanted to use our investment, our business and the experience of our people to create genuine opportunities within the community.
“To see that our investment has generated an estimated £330,000 of social value is incredibly powerful. It demonstrates what can be achieved when businesses and community organisations work together with a shared purpose.
“The figure is important, but the real impact is found in the people behind it. It is reflected in every young person who gains confidence, develops a new skill, improves their wellbeing or begins to see a potential career path.
“We are extremely proud of the partnership and look forward to building on the impact we have created together.”
Building on the partnership
The report provides Westbury FM with a clear and credible measure of the difference its investment is helping to make.
It also strengthens our commitment to supporting CACT’s work and exploring further opportunities to provide workplace insight, mentoring, skills development and routes into employment.
By combining community investment with practical business involvement, we can help create opportunities that deliver benefits long after an individual programme has ended.
£30,000 invested. £330,000 of estimated social value created.
That is an impact we are proud to support.
